Using our in-house design department and mock-up facility, we designed and constructed GRG ceiling panels to replicate the original concrete structure of this iconic building. Supported from a bespoke GRG-clad metal support grid of cranked profiles, we were able to achieve the pitch of the original ceiling and curved wall abutment panels.
Due to the size of the 6ft square modular panels, we designed a bespoke lightweight aluminium frame to support the GRG panels. This incorporated an airtight smoke seal while preventing the sagging or pillowing of the panels. The frame maintained the strength and desired aesthetics of the system but reduced the overall weight of each module by 30kgs. This allowed a fully warranted Unistrut sub-grid frame to be used unsupported. This spans the existing trusses, keeping the ceiling void free of ceiling hangers.
We were delighted that our work on this project secured us the winning entry in the ‘Ceilings (Large Contracts)’ category of the 2023 FIS Contractors Awards. The judges hailed the project as ‘a shining example of innovation’ and said:
“The result is a spectacular ceiling, cranked to an apex with concave wall abutment panels designed to funnel smoke to the extractors.”
